About Reiki Healing
The term Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is derived from two Japanese words – “rei” and “ki.” The term “rei” means universal, and “ki” means life energy. It is the vital life force present in all created matter. Reiki is a very powerful system of hands-on healing that provides stress reduction, relaxation, and promotes healing. This system of healing is thought to be thousands of years old. It is believed to have originated as a Tibetan Buddhist practice that was rediscovered in the early 1900’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. His tradition and methods were passed along through several grandmasters of Reiki. Currently, there are many forms of Reiki. However, the Usui Method of Natural Healing remains the most widely practiced form. How does Reiki Healing take place? Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-invasive form of hands-on healing that uses universal life energy channeled through the hands of an initiated Reiki practitioner to the recipient. It is a universal process and does not align itself with any religion or dogma, so it is beneficiary to practitioners of any faith. Reiki energy, which is intelligent, spirit-directed energy, knows exactly where to go in the body to work to unblock energies and cleanse toxins from the system, thus creating a state of balance and harmony which promotes relaxation and allows the body to heal itself. Each session lasts between 45 – 60 minutes. The client remains fully clothed (may remove shoes for added comfort) and may choose to stand, sit, or lie on a massage table to receive treatments. The practitioner may apply their hands directly to the client’s body or place them slightly above the body (both methods are equally effective) in a series of hand positions that allow for the entire body to receive treatment. The practitioner may also scan the body for energy blockages and provide treatment in a specific area. It is important to note that distance healing is also offered and again, it is equally as effective as a hands-on treatment. It generally takes around 30 minutes, and a photograph or person’s full name are required for treatment.
Reiki has a long history that includes treatment for virtually every known illness and injury including serious problems like cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis as well as headaches, nervousness, anxiety, depression, colds, sore throats, skin disorders, insomnia, and impotence. It is always beneficial and aides to improve the treatment of all other therapies. Today, it is practiced in many hospitals and healing centers to enhance the results of medical treatment, acting to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, surgery, and other invasive procedures. Above all, it is an excellent tool for stress reduction and overall relaxation. Treatments can be used to facilitate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Reiki for Animals
Reiki is very effective for animals. Often, I find animals to be even more receptive to Reiki energy than their human counterparts. They generally don't have any reservations about receiving the energy and absorb it like a sponge. Animal Reiki sessions take anywhere from about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the animal. Like with humans (and everything else!), in-person and distance Reiki for animals are equally beneficial.
